Question and Answer Series
Session 5 – Steven Westbrook, poetry
author
Q
As a writer do you prefer using a pen name or real name?
Why?
A
My
Birth name is Steven Adams, as a writer I choose to go by Steven Westbrook. My
father wasn't a huge part of my life so I take on my mother’s last name.
Q
Which genre do you normally write? Are you comfortable
going out of your comfort zone?
A
Poetry all day long I enjoy fiction mostly as
a reading medium but I don't often write it. Closest thing to fiction I write
is Screenplays and stage plays
Q
How old are you? Male or female?
A
16
Male
Q
Do you like cats or dogs?
A
Both
are adorable in their own fashion
Q
Tell me something about you that no one else knows.
A
...I plead my fifth amendment
rights
Q
Are you married, dating, or single? If you’re married or
dating; have you ever cheated on your spouse or significant other? If you’re
single; do you like to play the field?
A
As of now I am single, by
choice. My last relationship ended in January and was really hard on me to say
the least; I prefer not to go into details. I don’t believe in cheating and
though most of my friends are female I simply enjoy the company of females and
for the most part have always been a one-woman guy.
Q
Have you ever contemplated suicide? If so, why did you
feel that was your only option?
A
I have thought about it but
never ever even came close to attempting. I'm a huge believer in the
aspect of "Tomorrow" and that with patience, resilience and
strength the human spirit can overcome a lot. I won't say ANYTHING
but a lot
Q
Have you ever been in trouble in school? At work? At home?
A
Middle
school was pretty much my rebel phase. I was suspended for fighting all the
time at school and I smoked weed for the first time. I've never really
encountered the law.
Q
Did you have siblings growing up? If so, how many?
A
I'm the only child my mother
and father had together. My father has four children whom I don't even talk to.
It's always pretty much been me, my mother, and my little sister from her.
Q
Did you have siblings later in life? If so, how many and
at what age did you get them? Were they adopted?
A
My little sis was born when I
was 6. As soon as she was born her father stepped out on us
Q
Where do you get your inspiration?
A
Any and everything abstract.
I like to explore places and aspects that really deviate from the
norm. when I do feel the urge to write a subject written a million times
before I try to make it as original as possible while still being familiar
Q
How do your approach your writing? Are more OCD? Plan
everything out with outlines and what amounts to storyboards? Or do you just
fly by the seat of your pants and work everything out as it comes?
A
A little bit of both, some
times I write entire pieces based off of a single phrase or idea, other times I
just write things as they come. But the thing about me and fiction is that I
cannot write a single word until I've mapped out the entire thing in my mind
first. Poetry lets me write whatever I want in any order I want and it only has
to make since to me.
Q
Do you like horror movies? Comedy? Pick your poison.
A
Anything retro or unique and I
like artistry in my movies. Film makers like Quentin Tarentino, Ralph Bakshi,
Stanley Kubrick, Spike Lee and Robert Rodriguez really nail it for me. I'll
pretty much watch any horror or Documentary and I enjoy Comedy, preferably with
lots of swearing.
Q
Do you enjoy certain types of books, but like to write in
another genre? If so, why?
A
Mostly 20th century fiction
and pretty much any poetry from any period. I don't really like to read too
many contemporary pieces.
Q
What are you currently working on? Do you have any novels?
A
Nothing big. If I do ever
write a novel It'll come during of after my college years when I get through
studying Literature. As a side project I love art. I love to draw and I love
photography
Q
Anything else that you would like to say before we end?
A
Hakkuna
Matata, Peace to the world, art is forever
